STCW USCG Vessel Security Officer (VSO)

 

Objective

The objective of the STCW USCG Vessel Security Officer (VSO) course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Vessel Security Officer in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, the STCW Convention and Code, and applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

Target Group

This course is designed for licensed and unlicensed mariners, vessel operators, masters, mates, and other personnel who have been designated or are seeking designation as a Vessel Security Officer aboard vessels subject to the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), ISPS Code, and STCW requirements.

Course Length

2 days – Course length may vary depending on the number of students. Total course time includes breaks.

Validation

This course has no expiration. However, mariners must continue to meet all applicable U.S. Coast Guard requirements for maintaining their Merchant Mariner Credential and STCW endorsement.

Prerequisites

Delegates must meet the eligibility requirements established by the U.S. Coast Guard for a Vessel Security Officer endorsement. Successful completion of this Coast Guard-approved course satisfies the training requirement for an STCW Vessel Security Officer endorsement. Additional sea service and credentialing requirements may apply.

Examination

Delegates will be continually assessed through classroom participation, written examinations, and practical exercises in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard and STCW requirements.

The STCW USCG Vessel Security Officer course covers:

  • Maritime security legislation and the ISPS Code

  • Duties and responsibilities of the Vessel Security Officer

  • Vessel Security Plans (VSPs)

  • Security risk, threat, and vulnerability assessments

  • Security inspections and audits

  • Operation, testing, and maintenance of security equipment and systems

  • Security awareness and onboard training

  • Security incident response and reporting

  • Coordination with Company Security Officers (CSOs), Facility Security Officers (FSOs), and regulatory authorities

  • TWIC requirements and maritime security compliance
